On Australia Day the National Anthem will be sung all over the country. From 1788-1974 the National Anthem was God Save the Queen (or King). Despite many competitions over the years, starting in 1840, it wasn’t until 1974 after a government sponsored competition was held, short-listing the entries to – Advance Australia Fair, Waltzing Matilda, and Song of Australia. Advance Australia Fair polled 51% of the votes and was selected.

I have been advised that Lieutenant Commander Peter Ashley retired, has proposed to erect a plaque at Sallyport in Old Portsmouth, England in Oct 2010, to commemorate the bi-centenary of Matthew Flinders return. We will follow this with interest considering the ties the Fleurieu Peninsula has with Matthew Flinders and Capt Baudin.

A Genealogy Addict: One who has more photos of dead people than living ones!
I thought I should pass on this warning that was sent in by a reader of Australian Family Tree Connections this month. She writes that scammers are now targeting genealogists. Please be aware where you leave your details. Further information is in the Australian Family Tree Connections/January 2008 p6, a copy of which is in our History Room.

I suppose many of you are watching the TV series ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ on Sunday nights on SBS. It’s very interesting, but I’m afraid that amateur researchers think that it all happens so easily, and we all know that unfortunately it’s not like that. I’m afraid I’ve already seen the backlash of that in our History Room. Apart from that it is an interesting show.

Jill Statton advises that registration is free and recommended, as otherwise searches only show the first 20 results. There is no record of parents, so no real ID other than address is given. There is also a future plan to release the records of the hospital’s convalescent home – Cromwell House.

Copies of Actual Correspondence received by a Family History Dept.
Our 2nd Great Grandfather was found dead crossing the plains in the library. He was married 3 times in the endowment house and has 21 children.
He and his daughter are listed as not being born.
I would like to find out if I have any living relatives or dead relatives or ancestors in my family.
Happy Researching,
Dawn
