We are still in the throes of warm sunny days with no sign of rain. The weather has been kind to all the tourists that have been inundating our area during the Easter break.

An entry in the Marriage Register of Encounter Bay raised some interest among the volunteers in the Alexandrina History Room.

John Cutler, bachelor, Goolwa, married 4th December 1871 in the office of the District Registrar  Pt Elliot, Douglas Faulkner, spinster, of Goolwa. Her name was definitely Douglas and that is the first time I have seen it as a female Christian name.

In February (History Room News No 31) I wrote a story on the breastplate found in the far north of SA. It was to be auctioned last month but ‘The Advertiser’ 14th April 2007 reports that the sale was stalled when Aboriginal heritage experts were asked to investigate it’s importance. I’ll keep you up to date!

War does not determine who is right – only who is left.  Bertrand Russell

This month we will be commemorating Anzac Day; last year I listed the soldiers mentioned on the Goolwa Soldiers’ Memorial and this year you will find below the men honoured on the Pt Elliot War Memorial, and plaques erected in the Soldiers’ Memorial Gardens, Horseshoe Bay, Pt Elliot.

Mr R.J. Miller, PO Box 106, Pt Elliot 5212 or phone 08-8554 2498 would like to know whether anyone has photos taken since 1922 of the gardens that he may copy, or does anyone have information on who planted the memorial Norfolk Island pines, and when? Also has anyone a copy of the plan of the above gardens?

You may recall that in History Room News No 31, Lorraine Pomery, 23 The Strand, Pt Elliot 5212 was also after details and photographs of the men.

The popular UK show Who Do You Think You Are?  is showing once again on PAY TV in Britain, and for a first ever will go live with the ‘National History Show’ 5-7th May at Olympia, London.  This popular show researches a person’s ancestry.  Jack Thompson is likely to be the first Australian celebrity to have his ancestry probed on a local version of the series, which will screen on SBS later this year.

CHOICE magazine recently tested a number of Family Tree Software programs.

Personal Ancestral File was probably the best choice if you’re unsure how far you want to go, and also it is free to download.

ROOTS MAGIC rated highest for ease of use.
