This month it’s St David’s Day on the 1st, St Patrick’s Day the 17th , and Greek National Day on the 25th March. I’m sure the Welsh, Irish and the Greek nationals will celebrate in style.
The Nov issue of ‘History Matters’ features an interesting article on the Barwell Boys (a boy-migrant scheme 1922-24) so named because it was promoted by the then Liberal Premier of SA, Sir Henry Barwell. British boys aged between 15 –18 years, were apprenticed to local farmers. The article is worth reading, particularly if your father/grandfather was one of these boys.

New books purchased by the Library ‘Great Sailing Ships of the World’ by Otto Schauffelen - gives comprehensive detail and photos of the ships. Unfortunately most of the ships are those built after 1900 (an exception being City of Adelaide and Cutty Sark); and `The Jetties of South Australia-Past and Present’ by Neville Collins. An excellent book for the family historian with comprehensive information.

Rampant Scotland Newsletter reports that there is evidence that increasing numbers of town dwellers are moving to the countryside – and then complain about cows mooing, barking dogs, sheep wandering on the road and “noisy” tractors. While some of the stories just raise a laugh, some farmers have been taken to court for allowing sheep and cattle – or muck- on the roads.
[In our local area I think the gripe is that it is getting harder to cross the busy main street!]

Australian Family Tree Connections Magazine, March 2006 edition, has some very good websites (12) for genealogy. You may still be able to purchase a copy from your local newsagent, (very reasonably priced at $5.95.) One site is a translator http://ajax.parish.ath.ex/translator/
Civil parishes in England http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_civil_parishes_in_England
Another is a site to re-unite photos with their rightful families www.deadfred.com

Among my many family photos, is one of my grandparents, Louis Edward Esselbach and Linda Jane Williams, on the occasion of their marriage 1st August 1906 - taken with their respective family members. It is a beautiful photo of this gathering, but like so many photos inherited, not a single name of the 20 people in attendance. I have painstakingly tried to match members from other photos. There was one gentleman who did not seem to ‘match’. Dressed in a dinner suit, dress shirt with white bow-tie, and a peaked cap.
Anyway, on a hunch, I entered (Rev. Chas. Bright) the name of the minister who married my grandparents, into the State Library website www.slsa.sa.gov.au and ‘bingo’ there were several references to him plus a digital photo, which matched my mystery man. Now if he had worn his minister of religion robes, I would have known!!
[with family history you just need lots of patience - and cunning!! ]
Photo taken by Bill Cox c1981.
This photo is of a stile that was situated on the western end of Crocker Street, giving access to the Goolwa Oval and the Methodist Church via a turnstile. Does anyone know when the stile was built?

We are seeking contributions for a mooted book of stories, pictures & poetry of memories of life in our area.
Provisionally, the book is titled “Alexandrina Memories”, and we hope to have short stories of about 3 pages, and to make a book that will give tourists, visitors, new and old inhabitants some stories and “feel” of our area, and the way it was, and is. We would like to organise a committee to oversee the project as it develops, so if anyone is interested in becoming involved, please contact us.
We would appreciate any contributions, which can either be brought in to the Goolwa Library or sent to “Alexandrina Memories” c/- Frodo, Goolwa Library, 11 Cadell St, Goolwa or email frodoleg@hotmail.com
