Thank you so much for the positive feedback after the last newsletter. It is great to know that people are interested. Any comments, good or bad, are welcome or perhaps you have something relevant to contribute. Sometimes I sit in front of the computer and wonder what to put in the current issue.
Frank Tuckwell advised me that the Point Sturt Church of Christ (mentioned in the August newsletter) is very much alive and well. Currently a portion of the property which contains the camping area is subject to sale by the Churches of Christ to the Westminster School. Funds from this sale will be used for refurbishing the old chapel, interpretive signage, beautification and landscaping of the whole area. It will become one of our heritage gems, he says.

Have you heard that the SA Birth, Death & Marriage Certificates have been increased to $39.50 whereas NSW only charges $28.00 and they have online index search for historical records. It is such a rip-off!

Graham Jaunay advises that Australians may access British Newspapers by obtaining a reader’s card from the National Library of Australia. This may be done online at www.nla.gov.au by clicking on the link Get a library card.

Further to my paragraph from ‘Placenames Australia’ on snigger-worthy names I have been handed a cutting from ‘The Age’ newspaper which also did a story on Crapstone.
In Britain there’s Ugley, Essex; East Breast, Scotland; North Piddle, Worcestershire; Spanker Lane, Derbyshire. How can you appear dignified when applying for a job and you live in Crotch Crescent, Oxford; Titty Ho, Northamptonshire; Wetwang, East Yorkshire.
These names were established hundreds of years ago and were not rude at the time. Place names and street names are full of history and it’s only because language has evolved over the centuries that they’ve wound up sounding rude.
(from ‘The Age’ 24th January 2009).

Over the page is a list of Employees of the River Murray Navigation Company who were on the brigantine ‘Josephine L’Oizeau’ some months before it was shipwrecked at Pt Elliot on 10th July 1856.
The brigantine reached Pt Elliot from Adelaide with cargo and passengers for the
P.S. Albury at Goolwa. Late in the afternoon a strong gale blew up, the ship’s anchor parted and she ran ashore. Passengers and crew were landed safely.
