Births, Deaths and Marriages Registers

 

 

Original registers

 

 

District registers of Births to 1906, Marriages to 1916 and Deaths to 1967 were returned for indefinite loan to Public libraries from the Registrar of Births Deaths and Marriages for use by genealogists and local historians in March 1993. The loans are subject to a number of conditions as follows:

 

"1. Pursuant to the provisions of the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 1966 and the Public Libraries Act 1982 (then in force), the registers and indexes remain the property of the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages and are committed to the care and custody of the library.

 

2. The library may film the registers, and/or film or photocopy the indexes, to provide an alternative searching medium at the library and/or to extend the benefits of the collection to branch libraries.

 

3. Copies of the register or index, or any part thereof, shall not be allowed for any purpose other than those set out in condition (2) above, except with the specific approval of the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages in each instance."

Original BDM registers for Encounter Bay and Yankalilla are held in the locked glass fronted cupbosrds in the History Room

   - Encounter Bay books include Victor Harbor and Goolwa

   - Yankalilla books include Kangaroo Island

   - NO photocopying allowed

   - please use white gloves (provided) when handling these books.

   - please ask library staff for access to the locked cupboards housing these books. Identification will be required.

 

CD-ROMS

   - access is available only from the History Room computer. Library registration is required for access - please provide identification to staff at the Ask Here desk. Contact library staff (8555 7000) for reservations.

Alexandrina Council's Cemeteries Register

 

This register has been generated from records and mapping within the Alexandrina Council's databases. It also contains records that have been provided by local church parishes that are not maintained by the Council but it does provide a wider genealogical database for the community. It is intended that this register will be available via the Council website www.alexandrina.sa.gov.au in the near future.

 

Council's staff and volunteers have also captured images of headstones at Milang, Hindmarsh Island, Mount Compass and Currency Creek, and a website is being developed to provide links to those images.

 

A listing of Cemeteries in the Alexandrina Council Area is contained here, however the booklet held in the History Room contains photos and maps of the cemeteries.
